How to plant hyacinth bulbs
Hyacinths bloom in spring and the bulbs can be planted in the fall, before the first frost kicks in. The hyacinth bulbs need a cold period in the soil to bloom. Planting hyacinth bulbs is easy and straightforward. Simply choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, dig a hole that's about 3 times the height of the bulb, and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing upwards. Cover the bulb with soil, water it well, and wait for it to bloom in the spring.
History of the crocus
There are at least 120 different varieties of crocuses, of which about 30 are cultivated. In 1597, 11 species were described in the book 'General History of Plants gathered by John Gerard'. It is mainly native to the Balkans and Asia Minor; a few species occur in Central Europe and Central Asia. Crocus is Greek and Arabic for saffron, a reference to the Crocus sativus from which the herb saffron is obtained. The crocus has been cultivated as an ornamental plant in the Netherlands since 1550. The legend goes that Krokus, a beautiful young man from Arcadia, while throwing a discus with his Olympic friend, the god Hermes, was fatally hit by such a stone disc and that on the places where his blood fell down, purple flowers appeared: crocuses.
